Roseberry Topping

Roseberry Topping is a really peaceful part of the world.  It’s a lovely and distinctive looking hill with lots of walks and wonderful views.  There's also a monument to Captain Cook there, which I like to visit.

When I was growing up we spent a lot of time abroad, so English holidays mean a lot to me.  I remember Roseberry Topping as a fun place we would go to on Sunday afternoons.  We would have a walk and then afterwards a pub lunch. For me, the place conjures images of idyllic English family days out. 

Nowadays I don't get the time to walk all the way to the top.  But when I drive from where I live to nearby Stokesley, Roseberry Topping is on the left hand side all the way along the journey and I love to see it.

If you are going to visit, I would suggest you start by picking up some essentials in nearby Great Ayton.  Grab an ice cream from Suggitt's ice cream shop and a proper pie from Petch’s.  Once you've got those, there’s a lovely little stream nearby where you can sit and relax before your walk.

I have pictures of Roseberry Topping in my flat, so it’s always there in my mind.  It's an iconic thing.  When I'm driving home on the A19, I know that when I see Roseberry Topping I am almost home."
